Schon als Kind liebte Rowling das Lesen und erfand auch früh eigene Geschichten, die sie ihrer kleinen Schwester erzählte. Sie studierte Französisch und klassische Altertumswissenschaften und arbeitet anschließend in verschiedenen Büros in London. Die Idee der Harry Potter-Serie kam ihr im Zug von Manchester nach London im Jahr 1990.
Eine Weile lebte sie als alleinerziehende Mutter, teils von Sozialhilfe, während sie an ihrem ersten Buch arbeitete. Mehrere Verlage hatten ihr Buch abgewiesen, bis Bloomsbury Publishing letztendlich zusagte, ihr aber wenig Hoffnung auf den großen Erfolg machte. Es wurden nur 500 Exemplare veröffentlicht. Jedoch wurden bereits wenige Tage nach Veröffentlichung die amerikanischen Rechte für eine sechsstellige Summe gekauft, eine immense Summe für das erste Buch eines Autors. Das machte das Buch in Sekundenschnelle bekannt. Tatsächlich wurde erst nach dem dritten Buch die ganze Welt auf Harry Potter aufmerksam. Der Rest ist für uns alle Geschichte, denn mittlerweile sind alle Bände weltweit millionenfach über den Ladentisch gewandert.
